Build it step by step

  1. 01

    Start with a small project

Copy a short recording into a permanent project folder before importing it. Open Resolve, create a named project and use Project Settings → Master Settings to choose 1920 × 1080 for a widescreen edit. Match the source frame rate before building the timeline. This guide follows the desktop Edit and Deliver pages; the iPad interface and available codecs differ.

  2. 02

    Import and check the footage

On the Edit page, drag your files into the Media Pool. Use bins for gameplay, voice and music if you have several files. Double-click the gameplay to preview it and confirm that both picture and audio work. If Resolve offers to change the project frame rate, accept only if it matches the format you intend to edit.

  3. 03

Keep the moments that tell the story

Drag the gameplay onto the timeline. Move the playhead to a cut point, select the clip and use Timeline → Split Clip. Cut at both ends of an unwanted section, remove it and close the gap. Keep enough lead-in for viewers to understand each moment. Check that linked audio moves with the picture, especially when other tracks are present.

  4. 04

    Make speech easy to hear

Select a clip and adjust its audio level in the Inspector, or use the clip volume line. Lower gameplay and music while someone speaks. Listen through headphones and watch the main audio meter for clipping. If commentary and gameplay were recorded into one mixed track, you cannot independently rebalance them as if they were separate recordings.

  5. 05

Add text where it explains something

Open Effects → Titles and place a basic Text title on a video track above the footage. Select it, edit the wording in the Inspector and trim its duration. Use a short label such as a map name or key result; keep it away from the HUD. Play the section to check that a viewer has time to read it.

  6. 06

    Review before rendering

Watch the full timeline without stopping. Note confusing cuts, silence, black gaps and titles that disappear too quickly, then fix them. Check the final frame and save the project. For a first practice edit, clear pacing and understandable audio matter more than transitions or extra effects.

  7. 07

Render and inspect the actual file

Open Deliver. Choose Custom Export, a filename and destination, then MP4 / H.264 if your installation supports them. Match timeline resolution and frame rate, enable audio export and select Entire Timeline. Add the job to the Render Queue and start rendering. Open the finished file outside Resolve and check the beginning, every edited section and the ending.

Check your finished work

Use this checklist before moving on.

Something not working?

A clip will not import or shows only audio
  • Check codec support for your operating system and Resolve edition. A .mp4 extension does not guarantee a supported video codec.
  • Keep the source and create a supported editing copy if needed; changing the filename extension will not convert it.
Playback is too slow to judge a cut
  • Try a lower Timeline Proxy Resolution from the Playback menu.
  • Generate proxy media for difficult footage and allow that process to finish. Proxies help editing responsiveness; inspect the final export separately.
The render is silent or ends too early
  • Enable Export Audio and check that the intended tracks are unmuted.
  • Select Entire Timeline rather than a marked In/Out range, then confirm the render duration.
I want to make a vertical Short
  • Start a separate 1080 × 1920 timeline and reframe each shot for the vertical view.
  • Check titles and game UI again after reframing. Do not stretch widescreen gameplay to force it to fit.
